The Vienna HighEnd 2026 has just wrapped up, and you can already dive into photos and first impressions in the opening chapter of our show report, curated by the indefatigable Carlo Iaccarino - who, quite mysteriously (to me at least), still manages to enjoy HiFi shows after all these years 😊
The Vienna HighEnd isn't just another event on the calendar; it's the show that has effectively inherited the mantle of the Munich HighEnd - long considered Europe's most important HiFi exhibition, and certainly one of the most renowned and well‑attended worldwide. As we've already noted, the venue was vast (borderline dispersive), perfectly suited to hosting large crowds. Vienna itself is, if anything, even more appealing and easier to reach than Munich - at least from where I stand. All the ingredients for a major public success were clearly in place.

Official figures more or less confirm attendance levels in line with previous years. To be precise:

In short, roughly 23,000 people attended - fewer than half of whom were actual enthusiasts (rather than industry professionals). Both Munich and Vienna are, in truth, B2B‑oriented events: opportunities for companies to present their products to the press and to trade operators (dealers, distributors, and so on). Still, the show is open to the public for 2 days, so the B2B excuse only goes so far. One might argue that many “professionals” were in fact regular enthusiasts who obtained a trade badge through a friendly dealer, perhaps to access some special event. Fair enough - let's generously round up the number of “non‑professional” enthusiasts to 15,000. But let's also remember that this is a very popular show, in a major tourist destination with over two million residents. I don't know about you, but to me 15,000 enthusiasts spread over two days feels like very little indeed.

You may be wondering why this analysis matters. Well, as I always say, numbers never lie - provided we look at them with intellectual honesty and without football‑fan fervour. A turnout of this scale, from 76 different countries no less, is genuinely worrying. It once again highlights the shrinking interest in this sector - all the more paradoxical considering that products from 1,000 different companies were on display. That's roughly one company for every 15 enthusiasts. And let's be honest: each company showcased more than one product... the maths becomes brutally simple. Where are the tens or hundreds of thousands of HiFi enthusiasts we like to imagine exist? And I'm talking about those who actually buy HiFi components with some regularity - not the ageing, slightly dazed types who, instead of staring at roadworks with their hands behind their backs, wander around HiFi shows to feel like dreamy teenagers again. Forums and groups are overflowing with the latter.

So no, it's not me claiming that this market has a serious problem with attractiveness and generational turnover - the numbers say so. And pushing prices further into luxury territory, as many companies are doing, is, in my view, not exactly the smartest strategy.
